Partial list of the Officers and Crew of the frigate Trumbull compiled from “Statement of Claims”

The following partial list of 26 Officers and Crew of the frigate Trumbull is compiled from the “Statement of claims which have been adjusted and allowed at the Treasury Department…on the 27th of March 1792” and published beginning page 387 in American State Papers (1834). Each man’s rate, date the claim was adjusted to and amount of claim is noted. The date noted is the last date of pay. Those noted as paid to 2 June 1780 were killed in Trumbull’s engagement with the Watt. Those noted as paid to 14 April 1781 were captured while serving on the frigate Confederacy. The frigate Trumbull was taken by the British warships Iris and General Monk on 28 August 1781. A second simplified and alphabetized list follows for ease of internet browsing.

The following partial list of 60 Officers and Crew of the frigate Confederacy is compiled from the “Statement of claims which have been adjusted and allowed at the Treasury Department…on the 27th of March 1792” and published beginning page 387 in American State Papers (1834). Each claimant’s rate, date the claim was adjusted to and amount of claim is noted. The date noted is the last date of pay with two primary groupings; the third week of May 1780 when the Confederacy returned from Martinique upon the conclusion of her second major cruise and 14 April 1781 when the Confederacy was taken without a fight by the British warships Roebuck and Orpheus off the Delaware Capes while returning from Cape Francois in the West Indies with a military cargo. The following partial list of 11 Officers and Crew of the ship Ranger is compiled from the “Statement of claims which have been adjusted and allowed at the Treasury Department…on the 27th of March 1792” and published beginning page 387 in American State Papers (1834). With the exception of Thomas Applebee and John Colbath, the claimants represent the last crew of the Ranger prior to her capture at the siege of Charleston which resulted in the surrender of over 5,200 American soldiers and sailors on 12 May 1780. Partial list of the Officers and Crew of the brig Reprisal compiled from “Statement of Claims”

The following partial list of 13 Officers and Crew of the brig Reprisal is compiled from the “Statement of claims which have been adjusted and allowed at the Treasury Department…on the 27th of March 1792” and published beginning page 387 in American State Papers (1834). The claimants paid off to 1 October 1777 represent the last crew of the Reprisal prior to her loss off the banks of Newfoundland with all 129 hands on board except the cook. Jonathan Williams, a relative of Benjamin Franklin wrote to the American Commissioners in France, “…a man arrived in a french Vessell from the Banks who called himself the Steward of the Reprisal, and said that when the Ship foundered he saved himself by the gang Ladder which supported him, ‘till french Vessell took him.” Each man’s rate, date the claim was adjusted to and amount of claim is noted. Apparently, prize monies due the men were issued posthumously on 1 January 1778.  A second simplified and alphabetized list follows for ease of internet browsing.
