Before her orders dated 24 August were received commanding the brig cruise in company with the frigate Raleigh under newly appointed Captain John Barry, the Resistance sailed from Boston searching for the French fleet of Admiral D’Estaing. Missing the allied squadron, the brig fell into the enemy fleet of Admiral Howe on 28 August 1778 and was captured by the British frigate Ariel without a fight.
